The panel will explore what it means to be a choreographer in 2021, and what it means to be a dancer in 2021. In a world where the responsibility to generate content is shifting onto the dancer, what is the role of the choreographer? How are the lines being blurred in the creative process? How do we recognise and empower the role of the improviser?
"Building Your Own Entity" is a panel discussion with artists who actively and passionately intersect their mission with an entrepreneurial side. This collaborative discussion is designed for choreographers, performers, and educators interested in managing their careers and becoming well-versed in the arts community's different aspects.
This panel is interested in asking questions about the field both before and after the pandemic in order to approach the present with nuance and innovation. We will collectively question and explore the recent shift to a dominantly digital dance era and its confining or liberating effects on the creative process.
During this panel Nigel Campbell and Chanel DaSilva, Co-Founders & Artistic Directors of MOVE|NYC|, will walk us through the genesis and evolution of their equity-based work, sharing concrete tools to highlight, strategize, and actively cultivate greater equity in the dance field through entrepreneurship. Over the past six years, MOVE|NYC| has proven itself an essential part of the dance ecosystem. With a mission to cultivate greater diversity and equity within the dance profession and beyond, and with recent national recognition from Dance Teacher Magazine's Spring 2020 cover feature, "Changing the Face of Dance," MOVE|NYC| has provided greater opportunity for young dancers to achieve their dreams of a professional dance career since 2015 by actively working to eliminate historical barriers to the profession.
Taking space for a generative and transparent discourse around equity and the lack thereof in our Dance Profession. By inviting ideas—new and old—to be shared and reorganized, we will move towards turning our dreams of safety, financial independence, and liberation into reality.
How can we hold ourselves as artists accountable for the change we dance for and dream of? How can the Dance Industry be a pioneer for equity and change?
