Raised in San Francisco CA (the stolen lands of the Ramaytush and Ohlone peoples), Chuck Wilt is the Artistic Director of UNA, and holds a BFA in dance from NYU Tisch. In 2013, Chuck founded bi-coastal dance company UNA Productions, primarily working in California and NYC. UNA has been presented by the Chutzpah! Festival in Vancouver, Sointula and Alert Bay-performing and engaging in cultural exchange with the ‘Namgis First Nation Community, presented by Fusion International Japan in Kaga and Tokyo, co-presented by the ODC Theater, presented by the Spectrum Dance Festival at The Launchpad, Movement Research at the Judson Church, 92nd St. Y/FAN and Dig Dance, Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out, Springboard Danse Montreal, Dumbo Dance Festival, Tisch Summer Dance Festival, CPR and more. In early 2020, Wilt/UNA was an Artist in Residence at Berkeley Ballet Theater, Wilt created a new work for Berkeley Ballet Theater/Post Ballet which premiered at YBCA. In 2019, Chuck was an Artist in Residence of Fusion International (Japan), and for 2019/2020 an Artist in Residence at Brooklyn College through the CUNY Dance Initiative. In 2018 he was selected as a Dance Initiative Artist In Residence (CO), a recipient of the Rainin Opportunity Fund and an Artist in Residence at the 92nd St. Y (NYC), and in 2017 Chuck was a choreographic fellow for the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation NDCL. Wilt has created work for LITVAKdance Company, been an emerging choreographer at Springboard Danse, set senior solo repertory at SUNY Purchase and Ailey Fordham, set repertory for the senior classes of 2019 & 2020 at Ailey Fordham and the senior class of 2021 at NYU Tisch, set repertory for the ODC Youth Company, been on faculty for Tisch Summer High School Program, has taught at the Lines Ballet Training Program as well as internationally. This year, UNA will be in residence at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center as well as through RoundAntennae and is planned to set repertory at UMD and SALT Pro. As an artist and choreographer, Wilt's work looks at intersections between queerness, gender, and the natural world. Common themes within the collaborative companies' work are unity and celebrating our differences.
Company mission
UNA Productions is a bi-coastal dance production company, founded in 2013 by Artistic Director and Choreographer Chuck Wilt, creating work in California and NYC. UNA's mission is to discover and communicate deeply rooted embodiments of human existence through physically powerful dancing and imagery that are evocative and colorful. UNA celebrates our differences as people and is dedicated to bringing vibrancy and joy to the world. Artistic Director/Choreographer Chuck Wilt investigates ways to increase people-to-people connections while illuminating the diversity of human experience. UNA has also developed company initiatives to create additional opportunities for performers, facilitate collaboration with choreographers, and provide training and educational outreach to communities. Through the Extended Family Initiative, UNA has performed the works of Roy Assaf and Bobbi Jene Smith, UNA has collaborated with flautist/vocalist Melanie Charles, drag queen/cellist Rose Nylons, songwriter/producer Sho Ishikura and poet/visual artist Mange Hellberg among others. In 2020/2021, UNA is collaborating with House Choreographer Rebecca Margolick on a film and performance work and will be collaborating with another choreographer TBA.
